How to celebrate Halloween and Fall, Sustainably!

Allison is sitting next to a pallet full of very large pumpkins the size of toddlers. She's wearing her signature hat and a floral dress.
I have absolutely no business with pumpkins this large!

The air is cooler, leaves are changing, and pumpkin flavored everything is back in stock! If you're looking for ways to decorate and celebrate Halloween and fall season while being kind to our environment, then you'll love these ideas!

Support local businesses/farms

Go Apple picking

Stop at a farm stand for local honey, fresh baked goods, fresh produce (Squashes and sweet potatoes are excellent this time of year)

Several large, lazy pigs are laying about. 2 are cuddled in a shady shelter
I love visiting the farm animals at the pumpkin stand!

Decorate with pumpkins, gourds, glass gem corn. Use them as is or carve them or make a wreath! If you decide to carve your pumpkins- DO NOT use bleach to extend the life. You may accidentally be harming wildlife who want to eat the yummy pumpkin later! Paint is also popular for decorating- if you go this route, make sure you dispose the pumpkins in the trash as most paints contain plastics (acrylic) or other chemicals that we don't want in the environment.

Learn a new recipe that incorporates seasonal flavors! I personally love Acorn squash roasted in the oven with a smidge of butter and brown sugar. It's simple and scrumptious!

Need a costume for Halloween? Raid your closets, or your family's, to see what you can repurpose with a little creativity. Thrift stores also have costumes that they have waited all year to put on the floor!

Spooky boi

Feeling crafty? Why not make some cute reusable fall décor like these spooky ghost from fabric scraps. Get creative and make pumpkins, leaves, or squashes!

Time to get rid of all your pumpkins and natural fall décor? I like to leave mine up until December. When it is time to remove them, I place them in the woods where the animals will be able to feast on the yummy veggies. Don't have woods near you? Often there are farms that will except uncarved pumpkins or squash to feed their farm animals or there are even pumpkin chucking events! If you have a compost (or a friendly gardening neighbor) they also make excellent compost!

I hope this has given you some ideas for how to celebrate the fall season a little more sustainably! If you're looking for more fall DIY décor ideas, check out my Pinterest board and as always, give me a follow over on Instagram or Facebook to see what I'm getting into!

Happy Fall, Y'all!
