My partner bought a Christmas tree earlier this month and announced we would keep it up year round, decorating it for every season!

The lights are orange I promise!

So far I'm having a lot of fun think of different ideas for all the seasons and holidays. We have lights that are programmable LED's so we don't have to worry about redoing the lights each time, we can just pick a new color! I'm not normally a huge Halloween celebrator, but I always have pumpkins and now I'll have a spooky tree too!

These ornaments are pretty straightforward, you can add your flair by adding extra appliques or embroidery. Get ready to raid your fabric scrap pile!

Supplies needed:

Free Ghost + Black Cat Sewing Pattern

White fabric scraps (ghost),I used an old flannel baby blanket

Black fabric (cat), I used an old fleece jacket

Bit of ribbon or string for hanging

Poly stuffing or scrap fabric for stuffing

General sewing supplies

Small fabric scraps for appliques in black and other colors (optional)

Zipper foot (optional)

Embroidery supplies (optional)

To start, you will need to download and print my Ghost and Black Cat Ornament Pattern and print it out!

Print on 8.5" x 11 sized paper and without the option to shrink to fit. This pattern doesn't rely on precise measurements though, so it's ok if it's bigger or smaller!

A cardboard ghost template with eyes is laid over a white baby blanket with pink edging.
Don't mind my cardboard prototype!

Lay the main pattern pieces out and cut them out of your fabric. I've included suggested shapes for a cat nose and eyes, they're a little finnicky to cut from the pattern so feel free to roughly cut a similar shape!

Before sewing anything together, applique or embroider the faces on if you want them! The cat eyes are fun to dig through the scrap pile and pick a bright color! I used a small zig zag stitch over my cat face features so nothing unravels.

Both sides of the ghost ornament are laid flat, with a ribbon looped over the face. Ready to get sewed!

Once you have your Ghost or Cat face sewn on, you will need to sandwich the hanging ribbon with the loop facing down between the good sides of the Ghost or Cat. Sew all the way around the ornament with about an inch opening on a non-curved side. Trim the edges, especially the curves, you can save the trimmings to stuff it too!

Flip the ornament inside out and stuff it with poly-fill stuffing or fabric scraps! I used poly-fill stuffing for my ghost so my colorful scraps don't show through, you might not have that issue if you have a sturdy fabric!

Sew up the opening with a sewing machine, using a zipper foot so it's easier to get around the stuffing. You can also sew it up with a ladder stitch if you prefer an invisible look! You can find a ladder stitch tutorial here.

Your ornament is ready to hang!
